AI for Children with Language and Communication Needs: Safe Product Design Notes
AI products for children require more restraint than excitement. The goal is not to maximize engagement. The goal is to support communication, learning, and autonomy safely.
For children with language or communication needs, useful tools may include visual routines, simple text-to-speech, pictogram support, reading assistance, pronunciation practice, or guided explanations. But every feature needs boundaries.
Design principles
- Parent or educator control by default.
- No unnecessary data collection.
- Local-first processing when possible.
- Clear, calm interfaces.
- No manipulative engagement loops.
- Explainable outputs and easy correction.
The best opportunity is not “AI tutor for everything.” It is a small tool that helps with one repeated moment: preparing a sentence, understanding instructions, following a routine, or communicating a need.
