How to Choose the First Business Process to Automate with AI
The first AI automation project should not be the flashiest. It should be the safest place to learn how your company handles inputs, exceptions, review, and accountability.
A good first process has five traits
- It happens often enough to matter.
- The current manual steps are visible.
- The output has a clear quality bar.
- Mistakes are recoverable.
- A human reviewer already exists.
Avoid starting with decisions that affect money, legal risk, health, or customer trust unless the system is explicitly designed for review and audit.
Start with a map
Write the process as a chain: trigger, inputs, transformation, decision, output, owner. Then mark which parts are repetitive and which require judgment. AI belongs first in the repetitive middle: summarize, extract, classify, compare, draft, route.
The goal is not to replace the process. The goal is to make the process easier to run, easier to inspect, and easier to improve.
